KEEP CALM and Happy 10th Anniversary!

The calendar (and Ted) pointed out to me that yesterday (March 10, 2017) was the actual 10th Anniversary of Grand River Glassworks! Ten years!
An anniversary is an occasion to reflect on what you have accomplished and I do so with happiness and satisfaction. I extend many thanks to the loved ones who helped and supported along the way – my handy husband Ted, my in-laws Gene & Henriette (Gene built the first studio), my girls Audrey and Jess, my beloved Thursday Night Therapy group, and my friends and customers.
Onward, calmly!

“If a central task of the artist is to say “Look at this,” both Rienzi Crusz and Laurie Spieker do exactly that, as they make the specifics of their place universal.” Judith Maclean Miller

Hung Up

I was out for a morning walk and the woods fairly danced with captured leaves – each a beautiful & intricate tableau of interrupted flight & motion.
Artists can stumble, along their Way, hung up on this and that. But like the leaves, always in a beautiful moment and place.

Under These Skies – Launched!

A beautiful new book, Under These Skies, was launched on October 19, 2016, at Grand River Glassworks. This newest chapbook from Stonegarden Studios features selected poetry from Rienzi Crusz and images skilfully captured from my glass art.

Stonegarden Studios is a non-profit press comprised of editor and publisher Judith Maclean Miller and designer Karl Griffiths-Fulton.

Judith Mclean Miller writes:
Rienzi Crusz and Laurie Spieker are among the company of writers and artists in Waterloo Region. Each works with rich imagery, in words or in stained glass, giving expression to their responses to their place. The generous support of the Cowan family has made this lovely book possible.

Books are available for purchase ($20) at Grand River Glassworks, WordsWorth Books, and UpTown Gallery.

What are You Thankful For?

From beginning to end, Life is an unpredictable fretwork.
This Thanksgiving, I wish for all a quiet sense of gratitude, and a grounded feeling of peace and contentment.

Strong at 93

I visited a lovely lady named Doris this morning. She had some scrap glass for me to look at, and was happy I agreed to take it for my scrap bins. Doris is an original recycler – she has been recycling long before it was the cool thing to do. While I was there, this lantern caught my eye – it was made by Doris’ daughter, Phyllis, and it is so beautiful! Phyllis is a lucky daughter, as Doris – at 93 – is the picture of beauty and spry health!

Please note that I “sell” or donate my scrap bins to people who work in mosaic or stained glass, or youth groups who are in need of materials. If I “sell” a bin, I donate that money to KidsAbility, my chosen destination for corporate donations. Every little bit helps and it keeps usable glass out of the landfill!

Summer’s End!

This languid summer is drawing to a close, and the slight frisson of fall can be felt by those longing for cooler days. I read just recently that fall is the “new New Year” and what better time than the present to plan your new hobby or fine tune your vitreous techniques. We have a new season of glass workshops planned – check it out here.
Can you imagine these gorgeously graphic chestnut leaves created in glass? I can!
